General information

Region Makarska Riviera comprises the following municipalities: Tučepi, Podgora, Gradac, Makarska, Baska Voda, Brela.

Makarska Riviera extends over 53 kilometers of coastline in the northwest - southeast, from Brela on north to Gradac in the south.

Coast lies at the foot of the mountain Biokovo and it is mostly covered by pine trees. This is a significantly rural region.

NATURAL BEAUTIES
"Through the hollow rock "Biokovo eye" you can see the whole Brela and coast."

The entire mountain Biokovo (36 kilometers long) and especially the part of the mountain located above Baška Voda is one of the most picturesque landscapes on the Adriatic. Above Baška Voda there are peaks St Elias (1640 m) and Šibenik (1450 m).

Hollow rock or "Biokovo eye" is located at the top of Biokovo above Brela, and it is a natural phenomenon. Through the rock you can see the whole Brela and coast.

CULTURE AND SIGHTS

The monastery at Zaostrog is the oldest preserved monastery in the entire area of Split-Dalmatia County. In the old village near Zaostrog there are three churches, old gothic church St. Barbara, St. Roko from the 17th century, and the church of St. Barbara from 1872.

In Podaca is preserved old Croatian church of St. Ivan with graves Kaćić.

One of the oldest  buildings in the area of Gradac is the chapel of st. Paškvalina on the hill Plan.

The statue of St. Nicholas in Baska Voda - Throughout the history Baška Voda was, because of their spiritual tradition, called little Vatican.

The complex of buildings Bekavci-Ivandić is located in the area of Donji Kričak. It started with building in 1880, and has developed gradually, and today is a representative example of folk architecture. By decision of the Regional Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments in Split, this property is protected as a cultural monument.

EVENTS AND TRADITIONS

Biklijada in Podaca is traditionally organized every year in September, the so-called festival "Goats and vines."

With old drink Bikla (mixing of fresh goat's milk and red wine), it is organized a culinary competition which involves professional and amateur chefs throughout the Gradac.

In Tučepi each year it is organized Fishermen evenings which are also a symbol of Dalmatian fishing villages. Such events are a good opportunity to reveal the life of the local population. Municipality Day is celebrated on June 13 and it is actualy the day of St. Anthony who is patron of the municipality Tučepi.

Folklore events in Tučepi are organized during the summer and everyone has an opportunity to learn about the Croatian folk dances, costumes and songs.

Baškovoško summer includes the entire events organized during the summer on area Bratuš, Baška Voda and Promajna.

GASTRONOMY AND WINE

Blitvenjak is a traditional cake in Brela made from spinach. At first it might sound strange, but it is a very tasty dish.

Cake makarana - housewives in Makarska were doing it for hundreds of years, but only in the special occasions. Recently, the Makarana cake became the part of protected intangible cultural heritage.

Baška-Valčić is specialty in Baška Voda. It is actually pasta with lamb stew.
