General information

This region includes the island Mljet, which is located in the northwestern part of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Mljet is actually the southernmost and easternmost of all the major islands. It extends parallel with Peljesac peninsula from which is divided by the Mljet channel.

It is named by honey (de Melita).

Mljet coast is very rugged, especially the northwest coast (Big and Small lake, bay Lastovska, Pomena and bay Polače) and the southeastern coast of the district Saplunara.

The relief feature of Mljet island is hilly, and the highest peak is The Big city, which is high 514 m. It is located in the central part of the island.

Mljet National Park covers the northwestern part of the island, with an area of 5.375 ha of protected land and surrounding sea. System of Great and small lake are two lakes that were originally around 10,000 years ago, freshwater until approximately the beginning of the Christian era.

District Saplunara as protected natural heritage - Due to the natural features this area is protected by law in 1965 (significant landscape). It represents one of the last remaining habitats of coastal sands in Croatia and habitat extremely rare and endangered sandstone mushrooms.

Odysseus cave or a cave on the island of Mljet is egg-shaped cave. The light never comes in cave because of the high rock. The cave has been habitat of the Mediterranean monk seal.

In front of the cave is a rock Ogiran. During the high tide or during the strong southern winds, rock is completely covered by the sea and is a danger to sailors. According to legend, that was the reason why Odysseus experienced shipwrecked and swam to the cave, where he took shelter. Local people are believing that Mljet is actual ancient Ogigija which Homer described in the Odyssey.

Cave Rikavica is located in the central part of the southern coast of the island.It is a cave which ensue from karst erosion, and it later became flooded. In the summer months it served the residents of the island as a shelter for fishing boats and as a source of drinking water when on the island was not enough built "gustjerna" (rainwater).

"Rikavica was named by the sound produced with the compressed air inside of the opening in the cave, which is with force of the waves thrown through the cracks of the rock. In such way it creates an insidious roar like thunder."

"The St. Mary island is located in the southern part of Mljet's Great Lakes. It sizes only 120 m x 200 m., but it is famous for its Benedictine monastery from the 12th century."

The book "Shipwrecked St. Paul in Croatian's waters of Mljet" is written by a Benedictine Ignacijan Djurdjevic, who described and cited many evidence about how the shipwreck of St. Paul took place precisely on the island of Mljet.

The Church of St. Mary is a heritage site.

The altar in the Church of St. Mary is one of richness in european culture, and its main part (front flagstone) dates from the 12th century. The stone floor in the Church of St. Mary is also a unique and specific, it dates back to the time of construction of the church with its original Romanesque rosette.

Chapels from the 14th and 15th centuries which have been restored, or partly restored.

The son of king of Bosna has died while he was on his pilgirmage to Mljet, so he was burried there. That toomb is also cultural resource, specific and unique on its way.

"KUD Natko Nodilo" is a cultural club formed in 1968. One of its traditional dances is Shrimp Boško.

Vrša is a traditional and universal hunting fishing tool. In times when owning a fishnet was a rarity, Vrša was due to its simplicity used as a basic fishing tool. It was made out entirely from natural materials of high quality, wicker Somine, and it could last up to 20 years.

Traditional product on the island Mljet is Košic. It is a round basket with handle, made of young wood Mrče (myrtle) or wild olive with modest decorative braid on top.

Mljet is known for its bond which is the main decorative element of the women's costumes,and which was embroidered on the headstell women. Headgear are very important part of women's dressing, they are related to age, status, purpose (work or ceremonial). This unique embroidery silk is obtained from silk worms, as well as in Konavle.

As the fish was always in abundance on the island of Mljet, the local people have developed various methods of conservation of that fish. Here you can taste other than fresh fish prepared in the traditional ways and specjalitete resulting from salted, smoked or canned fish in "galatina" or olive oil.

A special place in gastronomy of Mljet is occupied by eels caught in the mud-lakes.

On the island of Mljet grapes are grown since the time of the Roman colony of Melita. Here are the vast majority of vineyards located in karst areas, and of the varieties are usually Plavac and Maraština.
