General information

Municipalities that are located in this region are: Dicmo, Hrvace, Otok, Sinj and Trilj.

Sinj is a place of the Split hinterland characterized by field of Sinj which is the largest karst field in Zagora. This region is predominantly rural region and has excellent conditions for agriculture.

Sinj is widely known for the knights game Alkar which are solemnly held on the first Sunday in August, in a sign of victory over Turkish invaders.

NATURAL BEAUTIES

River Cetina is the largest middle-Dalmatian river that flows through the karst area and the field of Sinj.

Kosinac is the source in the village of Gala, which belongs to municipality Otok. This source is of great importance because it supplies nearly a whole area around Sinj.

Significant landscape Rumin consists of small and large Rumina.

On the northern slopes of Moser is Vranjača cave that is open to the public since 1929, and can be reached via Dugopolje and Kotlenica.

CULTURE AND SIGHTS

Kamičak is fortress which is shaped as a star, and it is located in the city center. Fortress is a tower that has a bronze bell which rings even today on the full clock. Kamičak is protected monument of Croatian Ministry of Culture.

Old Town, actually the old fortress which was a shelter to the people and soldiers during the Turkish invasion. Today is not very much left of the fortress, but the church was built to symbolize the covenant and gratitude to Lady of Sinj in the defense against the Turkish conquerors. Subsequently, in 2008, was made the bronze statue of Our Lady of Sinj, also on the Old Town.

Monument to Alkar is most distinctive symbol of Sinj, it is a sculpture of lancers on horseback, which is located at the very beginning of Sinj racecourse from which the Alkars are going into a gallop.

Among the most popular places to visit in Trilj are mills on the river Grab, rich with trout. High above the road that leads from Trilj towards Bosnia, in the midst of extraordinarily preserved nature reserve is located Čačvina fortress which was first mentioned in 1371. as the city of the Cetina prince Ivana II. Nelipića. The fortress offers a unique view of the Cetina region and an amphitheater of mountains that surround it.

Potravlje is the village 11 km north of Sinj dominated by remains of fortress Travnik. This fortress is rased under Svilaja by Cetina prince Ivaniš Nelipić in early 15th century.

The fortress Nutjak is located in Trilj, on a cliff overlooking the shore of the river Cetina. It was built in the 15th century.

"The people of Sinj victory attributed to the miraculous intercession of Our Lady of Sinj."

Assumption Day - the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 15 August, in Sinj is celebrated especially festive. This day is special for the people of Sinj for a famous victory over the Turks in 1715. The people of Sinj victory attributed to the miraculous intercession of Our Lady of Sinj.

The match Delmata and Romans is actually theater performance comical characters, the rules of the game are fictional and in the spirit of ancient times. It was created in order to promote the theory of the origin of football in this region.

In the village Potravlje even today are made ceramic pots with ancient technology.

Arambaši of Sinj are the most famous specialty of Sinj cuisine. Recently it was protected as intangible cultural heritage.

Uštipak of Sinj are traditional delicacy and an indispensable part of the festive occasions.

Sinj has traditional process of making wine by mixing black and white grape varieties. The result is a wine with bright red color, fresh and very drinkable. It is known under the name hrvaština. These wines represent the transition between heavy and light continental Dalmatian wines.
