General information

Municipalities that are located in this region are: Klis, Marina Okrug, Podstrana, Seget, Split and Trogir.

Split countryside region is a coastal area located in the Split-Dalmatia County. This region is the most populated and the central city is city of Split, which is also the second largest city in Croatia. It is a predominantly urban region, although less than 15% of the population lives in rural areas, rural tourism each year is gaining in importance in this region.

NATURAL BEAUTIES

Marjan hill is 178 meters high and at its foothills on the eastern side lies the city of Split. The highest peak of Marjan is called Telegrin, and it was named after the old telegraph station that was there in the Napoleonic era.

Cave Grotto or Cave of St. James is located west of the hill Drid, near Marina. Her depth is about 60 meters and width of 10 m. The cave was used through the centuries by various groups as a cult place. For this purpose in it were built stone altars long BC. Four are located in the lobby of the cave, and two in its interior.

CULTURE AND SIGHTS

Diocletian's Palace is one of the best preserved Roman monuments in the whole world. With this palace, in Split you can discover exceptional monuments of religious architecture.

Already mentioned cave of St. Jacob is except natural also an cultural attraction due to the fact that it was considered by ancestors as gathering place of the faithful. Thus, at one altar is seen carved figure of Christ and Mary from the Byzantine period. According to Christian legend, shepherds used the cave as a barn, but St. Jacob drove them the cattle from the shelter. After this they concluded that the cave should be used only for prayers to God. In the first part of the cave was built a chapel squared shape semi-circular ceiling with a simple altar table and open access to the interior. This chapel is actually the church of St. James and Philip.

Kamerlengo Fortress is located in the western part of Trogir peninsula. It was built in the 8th century by the Venetians as a military base. Today it is a multimedia center with a stage for various cultural events.

The tower of St. Marko is located in the northwest of the old part of Trogir. This is a round tower built by the Republic of Venice during the 15th century, in the age of Turkish attacks. The tower is facing the land, and connected the city walls with the Fortress Kamerlengo.

Klis fortress is one of the best preserved fortifications in Croatia, and it is situated between the hills Kozjak and mountain Mosor. Klis fortress was the seat of Croatian princes and kings, and thus one time certainly Croatian capital.

Cathedral of St. Lawrence in Trogir is one of the most famous monuments of Trogir and it is UNESCO protected world heritage. It makes a blend of styles from Romanesque to Baroque.

Radovan's portal is the main portal of the cathedral of St. Lawrence and also the most important medieval portal in this part of Europe. It was carved by master Radovan 1240th and was completed in the 14th century. Portal includes first sin (Adam and Eve) and redemption (Nativity), the Christological cycle, individual saints and apostles, show months, scenes of hunting. The different stylistic traditions are related, from Southern Italic to French. Artistically it is at the level of the best European of that time.

EVENTS AND TRADITIONS

Split (ceremonial) costume is greatly different from the costumes of neighboring rural communities in the 19th century. This is because of the big boom of the city and the rapid urban and cultural development. Specificity of costume of that time was Traversa (apron) and ribbon that was tied to the back of the skirt. Women in Split had women hair styles that are no longer covered with scarves, but the scarves with embroidery adorned their shoulders.

Medieval festival in Trogir is organized by The town of Trogir for the purpose of reconstruction of life in this area 600 years ago. As Trogir was one of the greatest cultural centers of the time, in May, the streets and attractions of Trogir are joining in creating a special atmosphere for all visitors who want to discover the customs, workshops, street entertainers, and food and beverage Middle Ages.

In the municipality of Marina there are active four cultural and artistic associations:

  • Association Lanterna (folk singers and pensioners of the municipality Marina)
  • Cultural and Art Association "Andrija Matijaš - PAUK" with sections (sections of the original folklore nurtures the original songs and dances on Marina area, mandolin orchestra performed covers of famous Dalmatian songs, a section of singers performed ojkavica, traditional folk singing in Zagora).
  • Silver Marina (People's Cultural Association)
  • Ivan Duknović

Listed Association kept heritage through festivals, various festivals and solo performances in order to revive the old traditions.

Traditional product - homemade garlic from Ljubitovica has only successful growth in this area, near Trogir. After the testing, it was concluded that nutritionally this garlic is healthiest in Europe.
