General information

Region Konavle includes Konavle, Cavtat, Čilipi, Pridvorje, Dubravka, Gruda, Ploče and Orašac. This region is located on the edge of south Dalmatia, on the border with Montenegro. The area is bordered to the north by the Konavle mountains, from the south with Adriatic Sea, to the east it extends to the entry into the Bay of BokaKotorska and the Prevlaka peninsula, and on the west it extends down to the cozy coves of Cavtat.

Almost 1/3 of the region is covered by forests, while the northern part is very mountainous and the highest peak is Snježnica (1,234 m). The central part is occupied by the Konavle field which extends over a length of 35 and width of 12 km. in its central part is confluence of watercourses of the rivers Ljuta, Konavočica and Kopačice.

Natural beauties
"Šipun cave is located in the northeastern part of the peninsula Rat in Cavtat, and is protected since 1963. "

River Ljuta and its upper stream is located in Konavle. It contains a set of mills which are, with river, protected as natural landscape.

Šipun cave is located in the northeastern part of the peninsula Rata in Cavtat. It is protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1963, and is popularly known as the Konavle Postojna. It is known for the inner lake and the great hall with stalactites. It is often connected with the legend that inside of  her the dragon has lived for long time, until sveti ilirije didn't pulled him out of the cave and burned him at the stake.

Not far from Čilipi is Đurović cave, which is a unique natural phenomenon. Its large hall is called the Hall of the Dubrovnik Republic and the whole cave covers an area of 9,000 square meters. The archaeological finds discovered at this place date back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Her stalactites are still changing, and because of the adaptation for visiting it became a big attraction in this area which everybody must visit.

Near Molunat is Prevlaka Park which is for people who want an active holiday. Besides being the perfect location for walking, swimming and enjoying nature, it offers a handful of games for children and adults.

Culture and sights

Roman period: the remains of a Roman aqueduct near the village Vodovađa, villa rusticae, iconic monuments (Mithras monument in Močići), tombs, remains of a Roman road above Cavtat and many fragments and archaeological finds.

The Middle Ages: necropolis in Konavle hills, Gabrili, Mihanići and the Dunava, of which the most beautiful is tombstone in Brotnice, located in the cemetery of the church of St. Tom.

The monument of the Dubrovnik Republic, the Rector's Palace in Pridvorje and Soko Tower in Dunava.

The mills on the river Ljuta. The source and the upper stream of the river Ljuta, where there is a set of mills, is protection of nature, and the watermill is protected as a cultural monument.

Mausoleum of known Cavtat Račić family which was built in 1921 on the site of the chapel of St. Roko from the 15th century. It was built of white stone from Brač in the form of a dome and the whole structure, which is built of the stone contains only a bronze as second constructing element. The whole mausoleum is full of symbolics which represents three basic stages of human fate: birth, life and death.

The Cavtat Summer is a cultural and entertainment event that is held every year in the period from late June to early September. It offers you a variety of cultural and entertainment programs, concerts of classical music, concerts gangs, folklore events and more.

The region Konavle is known for its folk costume, which is associated with the lifestyle of the local population. Costumes were originally made with silk thread, which is produced by the silkworm. Silkworms are carefully grown in each Konavle family, and silk is, after getting thread, dyed with natural colors red, yellow, black, dark green and blue.

Gastronomy and wine

Green pasta is indigenous and traditional dish in Konavle that are mentioned in various Dubrovnik's writings since the 15th century.

Mantala is the traditional Konavle cake, which is a unique dessert which has traditional recipe over 300 years.

Region Konavle produces quality and authentic wines. In addition to the world's known species such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, they are producing numerous local and indigenous species such as plavac mali, Kadarun, Dalmatinka and others. Among all of them a special place belongs to the indigenous domestic variety Dubrovnik Malvasia blanc, which has almost been destroyed and whose preservation and restoration is given special importance.
