General information

Drniš region includes the city of Drniš, the municipality Ružić, Promina i Unešić. This region is located in the Šibenik's hinterland, extends towards the western slopes of Svilaja from the central part of the river Krka. This region is a transitional area between the central and northern part of Dalmatia. It belongs to predominantly rural region.

NATURAL BEAUTIES

Canyon of river Čikola is protected since 1965. Čikola is the largest tributary of the Krka river, it springs near the village of Čavoglave, flows through the town of Drniš and flows into the river near Torak Lake.

Part of Čikola, which is protected as a significant landscape, is stretching from Drniš to about 1 km downstream of the new bridge for Miljevci across the river.

This area has a very deep canyon, which is an extraordinary geomorphological phenomenon, and the site is extremely important as a hydrological phenomenon in the karst. The canyon is deep in places up to 170 m.

CULTURE AND SIGHTS

Drniš fortress is located at 334 m above sea level and this is the only fort which is preserved in the city. It is located in the southwestern part of Drniš and offers a view of Peter field and river Čikola.

The fortress Trošenj is situated on the right bank of the river Krka, and it belonged to the Croatian nobles Šubić Bribirski and was built to control the strategically important bridge on the river Krka.

Ključica or Key is a fortress which is located on the right side of the canyon Čikola, and was build by the Nepilići in the first half of the 14th century.

The parish church of Our Lady of the Rosary is located in the center of Drniš, it was built in the period from 1871 to 1886, in neoromantičkom style.

The church of St. Anthony of Padova was built in the mid 16th century as a mosque, but Franciscans from Visovac renovated it into a church in the late 17th century.

EVENTS AND TRADITIONS
"Drnis is in Dalmatia known as the City of prosciutto."

"International Festival of prosciutto" is organized with the aim to promote a product that is widely known for its excellent taste and quality. The program, which is organized as part of the festival includes competitions in cutting prosciutto, fun - music programs, sports events and more.

The traditional product of this region is prosciutto from Drniš area, which has a certificate protected indigenous products. The traditional process of its production lasts 18 months and includes salting, pressing and drying on smoke and wind.

GASTRONOMY AND WINE

Titled "Dalmatian lamb" means three Dalmatian counties (Zadar, Šibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia) in which it is grown Dalmatian type of sheep, which thanks to the diet full of Mediterranean plants gives excellent and recognizable meat.

Roasted lamb is also known in the region and it is something you must try.

Debit, Maraština, Plavina, Merlot and Lasina are indigenous varieties in the area of the Drniš region.
