General information

Municipalities that are located in this region are: Pag, Kolan and Povljana.

The island of Pag is the fifth largest island in the Adriatic Sea and has a high coefficient of indented coastline. It is located under the Velebit, the longest mountain in Croatia.

"Kolan mud is a marshy habitat distinguished by the riches and diversity of the bird world. Because of its importance for the conservation of biodiversity is protected as an ornithological reserve."

The highest peak on the island is St. Vid (348 m) where you can see the whole bay of Pag.

The top St. Juraj offers a view of the entire sea channel, the Velebit and Pag bay.

A lookout over the town of Pag is very attractive too, you can see the whole panorama of the city. The entire island of Pag is very attractive due to natural sand, gravel and stone beaches.

On the island of Pag, by the category of special reserve are protected Kolan mud - mud Rogoza, and Big and Small mud, while Dubrava-Hanzine protected as forest reserve, also the category of significant landscape.

Protected natural attractions is also Pag triangle in Novalja. It is the imprint in the form of isosceles triangle that is believed to have originated before 12,000 years ago.

CULTURE AND SIGHTS

The town of Pag is rich in cultural and historical monuments. The most significant buildings are the Congregation Church of Mary's Assumption, the Prince's Palace and Tower Skrivanat.

Congregation of Mary's Assumption - The town of Pag was founded on May 18, 1443, and the first building for which the foundation stone was placed is this church, at the Petar Kresimir IV square.

Prince's Palace was built in the 15th century, and today is a renovated cultural monument which hosts various cultural events and exhibitions.

Skrivanat Tower is the only one remaining of nine towers that are along the walls, once surrounded the city. It was built in the 15th century and is still preserved in its original form.

The remains of the fortress Fortress is located on the southern part of the island.

Among all these buildings, it is also necessary to mention the monastery of St. Margaret and old magazines salt. A kilometer away from the city center is the archaeological site of the old town with the church of St. Mary and remains of an acropolis.

Pag was in the 19th century one of the first  towns with sundial in Europe. Label 15 Meridian is located about five kilometers from Pag on the gravel road in the area of St. Mary Magdalene.

"Pag folk costume is one of the most traditional values of the Croatian coast."

Folk costume of Pag is one of the most traditional values of the Croatian coast. Particular is the so-called Paški teg - type of work during which the lace on shirts and headgear is made on the base (threads). Italian teg indicates lace that is done without base and it is also an integral part of the costume, and they are protected by UNESCO.

Folklore Pag except for special costumes and adorned with traditional dance - Pag's dance, which is performed to the accompaniment of instruments "mišnice" (an instrument made from sheep or goat skin with a tube for blowing air and the double musical instrument).

"The Pag's Slave" is a folk drama which is traditionally performed during the carnival, Summer of Pag and Ethno evening.

Pag's Lace in the late 15th century was primarily created for the purpose of church liturgical vestments. Later, nuns of the monastery of St. Margarita started teaching women and girls sewing lace. Croatian Ministry of Culture has ranked this lace in the register of cultural properties, while at monastery of St. Margaret are kept specimens of old lace over 150 years.

Lamb from Pag has specific flavor due to the space in which indigenous sheep live. This place is karst, bare rocky ground on which grow a variety of herbs.

Pag is known for its salt production, derived naturally - draining the sea from salt pool by the sun.

"Lace is the most beautiful and original souvenir of the Pag. Embroiderers on Pag in the summer sew their lace on front door of her house, which you can buy as a souvenir. With lace, other white gold of Pag is the salt."

Gastronomija i vino
„The cheese is best known gastronomy brand of the island of Pag“

The cheese is best known culinary brand of the island of Pag. It is made exclusively from the milk of native sheep. This product is a license holder of "Croatian" and represents Pag and Croatia on all the fairs of the European Union.

Margarita in Pag for centuries produce "baškotin", and this is certainly the oldest sweet - kind of hard sweet toast made by special monastery recipe.

Benedictine nurture the production of baškotin more than 300 years. Today Baškotin is labeled as "Croatian" and "Croatian island product".

Among the wines made on the island, stands out the indigenous white variety Gegić and Žutica obtained from several varieties of wine.
