General information

Municipalities that are located in this region are: Kali, Kukljica, Pasman, Preko and Tkon.

Coast of this region is very indented and it is a typical example of the Dalmatian coast type. This region is significant rural region which means that about half the population still lives in rural local parts of region.

Kali is a municipality located on the island of Ugljan and it is the largest town of Zadar archipelago. The old center is called Siget. It is situated on a hill offering a magnificent view of the surroundings.

Kukljica is a small tourist and fishing village located in the southeast of the island of Ugljan.

Municipality Preko by position takes up about two-thirds of the northwestern part of the island Ugljan.

Municipality Tkon is located on the island of Pašman, the second largest island of Zadar archipelago.

Pašman island is far from the mainland with 2-5 km wide Pašman channel.

"Island Ošljak is protected as significant landscape."

Natural landmark that stands out in the region is an island Ošljak which is protected as significant landscape.

Galešnjak is a small heart-shaped island located in the Pašman channel between Turanj and the island of Pašman. Because of his heart-shaped layout is known as the Island of Love. This island is the most correct heart-shaped island in the world.

CULTURE AND SIGHTS

Benedictine Monastery of St. Kuzma and Damian in Ćokovac on Pašman provides you visit and the possibility to learn about the life and work of the Benedictines. The monastery is known Glagolitic center, which is visited by many scientists.

Also on the island of Pašman in place Mjesto (it accualy means Place) is a Franciscan monastery of St. Duje where they are exposed to books and manuscripts, works of art, liturgical vessels and vestments and archaeological relics.

On the island of Ugljan  is a Franciscan monastery of St. Paul the Hermit in which reside Franciscan Third Order. The monastery has spiritual exercises, Croatian language school for children of emigrants and it is possible vacation.

In the town of Ugljan is a Franciscan monastery and church of St. Jeronim.

Venetian fortress St. Michael dating from the 8th century, is located in Preko. Although in ruins, even today it is a favorite resort of the island of Ugljan which offers a spectacular view of the city of Zadar with the hinterland and the more than 200 islands of the archipelago and National Park Kornati.

In the hamlet Muline are the remains of an ancient oil mill from the 2nd century as evidence of 2,000 years of olive and olive oil production on the island Ugljan.

EVENTS AND TRADITIONS
"Priješka legrica se organizira u mjestu Preko na otoku Ugljanu i jedna je od najpoznatijih ljetnih fešti u Zadarskom arhipelagu"

Priješka legrica is organized in Preko on Ugljan and is one of the most popular summer festivals in Zadar archipelago during which are organized traditional summer games followed by a rich musical and entertainment program.

In Kukljica on Ugljan island, every year on August 5th, on the day of Our Lady of the Snow is held a traditional procession of boats when the statue of Our Lady of the Snows is transferred from the parish church of St. Paul to the votive chapel where, according to tradition, 500 years ago was snow in the middle of summer.

Fishing nights are held in Kali - event that promotes fishing.

On the island of Ugljan there is a manifestation called "šetemon ugljonskih guštov" which is consisting of numerous exhibitions, folklore, fishing festivals, concerts of classical and popular music, and sports tournaments.

On the island of Pašman in the winter time is organized Škraping "International Trekking Race" which got its name from the sharp stones. This sporting event - race, with climbing, running and orientation in nature, is characterized by a rich entertainment program and a presentation and fair with island products.

Special features of this region is tradition of making "Siknica", ie. low basket of thin wood, and another special product is so called "Sprta"  - woven basket with a handle.

GASTRONOMY AND WINE
"Ugljan is famous for its olive trees that provides extremely high-quality olive oil with special flavor."

The sea has fed for centuries this place with fish and shellfish, so their specialties are connected with them. Kali is known for tuna which is grown in their waters.

On the island of Ugljan there are more than 200,000 olive trees. Almost every household is engaged in olive growing and the Ugljan is the ideal place for tasting homemade olive oil.
