General information

Municipalities that are located in this region are: Starigrad, Jasenice, center and Posedarje Ražanac.

The area of south Velebit, as hilly and mountainous area, is recognizable by the canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica which dominate the whole area of Velebit and the Velebit channel. Canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica, as well as a large part of southern Velebit are protected by category National Park. The rest of the Velebit is under protection as a nature park.

Velebit region is predominantly rural region.

Starigrad is located in the northwestern part of the Zadar County, in northern Dalmatia.

Jasenice is located in the southern part of the Velebit mountain range. An integral part of the municipality of Jasenica is a coastal place Maslenica. It is named after the ancient olive trees, which are the residents for generations to the present day cultivated along the coast.

Novigrad is a picturesque Dalmatian town situated on the southern coast of the Novigrad Sea, in a long steep bay 33 km northeast of Zadar, built on the remains of the fortress from the 13th century on top of a steep hill above the city.

The whole area of Velebit is very attractive area that is rich in natural lookouts on mountaintops (eg. Holy Hill, Vaganjski Top, Black Top, Golić and others.). The river Zrmanja has a very attractive canyons at the delta.

The area south Velebit, due to large and vulnerable natural resources, is fully protected nature park (Velebit) and the National Park (NP Paklenica).

This whole area has numerous karst features - caves and pits that are formed under the influence of groundwater. The most famous and for sightseers adapted caves are Manita and Modrić cave.

In these protected areas we find numerous protected and endemic species of flora and fauna.

Večka tower is a medieval fortress located on the coast, between Starigrad and Seline. The tower dates from the time of defense from the Turks, and according to popular legend of King Dog-head, it was the royal court. Located directly on the beautiful Starigrad beach, so-called "Kulina".

Paklarić is the medieval fortress that is located on the position of a former fort from the east entrance to Velika Paklenica Canyon at an altitude of 121 meters.

Church of St. Peter is medieval building around which is a cemetery that was used from the 14th to the 16th century.

Mirle are funerary monuments along the Velebit trails incurred in the period from the 17th to the 20th century. They are connected with the funeral customs of the population that is due to the distance from the parish church and the cemetery had to carry their dead to the cemetery.

"Mirila represents a combination of tradition, mysticism and religion."

The church of St. Frane is located on the slopes of Velebit, under Tulove beams. It was built by the Austrian Emperor Francis I in 1932 to commemorate the then newly built road connecting the southern and northern Croatia over kršovitog Velebit.

The Church of St. Jure in Rovanjska is a valuable cultural monument of medieval architecture where the dome designed as a unique calendar and sundial with openings which in a way shows the correct time. Experts speculate that it was built between the 9th and 11th centuries. Today, the church of Sv. George's protected heritage monument and cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia.

The church of St. Andrew is an old church is about 2 km from today's Ražanac. There are some indications that here was buried King Stephen I, father of King Petar Kresimir IV.

Ethno Marasovići is one of the examples of restored traditional buildings. It is located at the entrance to the National Park, in the old village of Marasovići.

The most important feast is feast of the Assumption when the traditional pilgrimage to Veliko Rujno - the highest Velebit plateau, which is after followed by a big party with music and authentic dishes.

During the Novigrad Cultural Summer in places Paljuv, Pridraga and Novigrad are organizing various cultural events and festivals where folklore society "Fortress" from Novigrad and folklore society "Luzarica" from Pridrage are participating.

Known event in this area is the day of Novigrad's mussels, this is a newly created project that brought together fans of the shells. Growers have donated over 500 kg of shells, which were prepared for delicious food to its visitors. The project aims to association of growers in order to protect the authenticity mussels.

Gastronomija i vino

Area of Velebit and Novigrad Sea is suitable for the cultivation of mussels that are grown in several locations of the area.

The culture of life and work on this whole area is determined by a strong Velebit gale. Because of the influence of gale it is known Dalmatian prsut as special gastronomic delights that is complemented by domestic cheeses.

Velebit channel is rich with quality fish, there are also grown various types of shells, so the entire area represents an unusual combination of mountain and coastal cuisine.

The local population of the whole of the region prepares brandy in which is often put herbs that this area is rich of. The abundance of medicinal plants throughout this area, especially in the higher areas of Velebit, provides ideal conditions for the breeding of bees, which is also one of the parts of tradition.

Mussel has been a specialty for centurieson this area  and it is integral part of the Novigrad kitchen.

Sea trout - breeding these fish has recently come to life in the Velebit Channel, where the sea has a very high rate of purity and fish meat has a specific orange color like the color of salmon.
