General information

Šibenik region includes Šibenik, Vodice, Pirovac, Primošten, Rogoznica, Tisno, Tribunj, Boraja and Perković. This region defines a jagged coastline and hinterland enriched park forest Gvozdenov. The region is significantly rural, and the reason for this is a tendency of the population to live in the economic center of the county, in Šibenik. 

Regija Šibenik

Dragon's eye Lake or Rogoznica Lake is a unique phenomenon of the eastern Adriatic coast. It is surrounded by sheer cliffs, high 4-24 meters. The surface area is about 5300 sq m, and the maximum measured depth is 15 meters.

Significant landscape in this region is Gvozdenov. This site is protected by 1974.

Medieval Mediterranean garden in the complex of the Monastery of St. Lovre was recently opened to visitors, and during his tour you can visit the cave of Our Lady and church of St.. Lovre.

Fort St. Michael is on the 60 m high hill above the sea above the old town. It was built in the 15th-17th centuries.

Fort St. Nicholas is located at the entrance to the St. Anthony channel, built in the mid 16th century for defense from Turkish attacks from the sea. It belongs to the strongest forts on the Croatian coast.

Fort St. John is located at 115 m high hill, on the north side of the historic city center.

Šubićevac fortress is located southeast of fort St. John on the smaller hill. It was built the same year as the fortress of St. John.

Cathedral of St. Jakov is entirely built of stone. It is a unique building is known for its bold stone slabs and ribs without using any binding material. Cathedral in 2000 was included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage.

Great Mrdakovica is the hill in the hinterland of the town where there are remains of the Liburnian and Roman city which is in Roman written sources called Arauzona.

In Šibenik at the end of September, the town goes back in medieval times. During three days, the city is dominated by walkers in traditional costumes and uniforms, jugglers, clowns, fanfares, archers, knights, strings, organ players, artisans are demonstrating their traditional methods of processing wood, metal, wicker and stone.

Bakanalije in Vodice - They are held at unique historical site of the Roman cistern, with plenty of food prepared according to ancient recipes and lots of wines and showing of Roman customs and dances.

Customs of Primošten - a traditional folk celebration that aims to preserve and nurture the traditional ethno-heritage of Primošten.

International donkey races is held every year on the central square "Rudin" in Tisno. This event is special because it promotes donkeys and thus saves it from oblivion and extinction of this authentic, Dalmatian animal.

Šibenik cap is the most famous Croatian version of the red hats, types of popular headgear. Today is usually orange with two rows of black embroidered decorations. The older form of caps (mainly lower, still red, usually with a single set of connected circles) is preserved with museum specimens that are kept in the Vienna Museum of national ethnography, the Ethnographic Museum in Split, the Museum of the City of Šibenik and others.

Šibenik button once adorned the male folk costumes, and today you can buy it in the form of earrings, rings, pendants, pins for a tie, brooches, necklaces and so on. Button takes the form of two hemisphere connected in the middle, but the inside is hollow. On the outside is decorated with thin silver thread and beads. 2007 Croatian National Tourist Board has declared it the most original Croatian souvenir. Today Šibenik button is integral part of Šibenik folk costumes.

Luganiga or sausages made by a special recipe, are specialty in Šibenik.

Tomato sauce and polenta are also traditional dishes of the region, but there is a one special black shell which marked this region and today is certainly part of its gastronomic brand. This is a shell mussel.

Indigenous product of the region is cheese prepared by ancient method of fermenting milk, it matures in sheep's clothing, and it is delivered in the same to the market due to the strong, refined and unforgettable taste and aroma.

Šibenik region is famous for its red wine Babić, produced from the well-known vineyards of Primošten, and is one of the best red wines in the whole of Croatia.
