General information

This region includes the coastal areas of Zadar county where are located Zadar and Biograd Riviera. Those are: Zadar, Vir, Privlaka, Nin, Poličnik, Zemunik, Bibinje, Sukošan, Galovac, Sv. Filip i Jakov, Biograd, Pakoštane and Vrsi.

All of them are characterized by low and rugged coastline with shallow waters, numerous bays and beaches. This is the space of the most intense urbanization and therefore we can say that belongs to predominantly urban regions.

Bay of Nin is known for its healing mud whose efficacy is proven and it used for decades under the expert medical supervision to treat various ailments (rheumatic diseases, spinal deformities, problems of the musculoskeletal system and various skin diseases). 

CULTURE AND SIGHTS

The whole area of the Zadar region is by the density of cultural heritage and archaeological sites and monuments, among the largest in Croatia.

The church of St. Cross is located in Nin, known as the smallest cathedral in the world. It was built in the 9th century, and the layout of her in the form of an isosceles Greek cross.

In the area of Nin is also the Museum of Nin Antiquities where are exposed artifacts of all major historical periods of development of Nin.

Kaštelina is one of the most famous sights of the island of Vir. It is a Venetian fortress built in the early 17th century. Venetian authorities built it to protect the population of Nin of Turkish attacks. Part of this building has been preserved to this day. On the north tower there is a damaged winged lion which is a symbol of Venice.

Baptistery of prince Višeslav is the hexagonal stone baptismal dating from the early Middle Ages, and in addition to its value as a historical monument, is significant as evidence of the Christianization of the Croats.

Heritage Museum of Biograd preserves valuable heritage from the rich past of Biograd Riviera and the surrounding area, and the most attractive cultural-historical collection is "The burden of the sunken Venetian ship from 16.st".

EVENTS AND TRADITIONS

In Zadar the most important cultural events are musical evenings in St. Donat as one of the oldest music festivals.

Particularly attractive is the "Night of the Full Moon" - a festival of culture, food and customs of the Zadar region.

Area town of Nin is recognizable by the traditional pilgrimage to the islet of Zečevo on day of Our Lady of Zečevo.

Šokolijada of Nin is a unique event which is held in July and during which it is possible to try the unique specialty Šokol and get to know with the manner of its preparation.

Festival of sun and light in the church of St. Cross in Nin is a unique event that is traditionally held on the first day of summer, primarily because of the valorization of the architectural significance of the church of St. Cross as the smallest cathedral in the world during which are organized creative workshops and interesting lectures.

The town Biograd during the summer season in the period of July and August organizes "Biograd cultural summer". It covers a variety of fun, culture, fishing, folklore and other events.

Tourist season on the Biograd Riviera is opened by the event "Biograd's table" - Festival of the original food, beverages, culinary delicacies, souvenirs and original folklore.

Pakoštane is characterized by a unique manifestation "Days of the Vrana Knights" which is organized in late August, and it shows medieval life and medieval wars with the Turks.
